Useful Information for Indians visiting Botswana

Botswana is a landlocked country sandwitched between South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Persons travelling from Asia by air normally need to transit through Johannesburg from where there are about seven flights a day by small planes. It is possible to transit through Johannesburg without obtaining a visa for South Africa

It is, however essential to obtain Botswana visa for any purpose. There is no High Commission or Consulate of Botswana in India. The Diplomatic Missions of Botswana in Asia are located in Beijing and Tokyo. The others are in London, New York, Geneva, Brussels, Stockholm and in African Countries.

In countries like India where there is no diplomatic Mission of Botswana, it is possible to apply for visa from the British High Commission. The applicants can also apply for visa through resident company or individual in Botswana to the Department of Immigration. Botswana authorities insist that persons applying for visa should submit applications 30 days in advance. There is no provision for otaining visa on arrival at airports in Botswana.

If you apply on prescribed application form, please affix two passport size recent photographs along with photo-copy of relevant pages of passport. Otherwise if you send only 15 items of information listed above, photograph may be submitted on arrival.

Visa fee of Pula 500 (about Rs. 5000/-) (as in August 2004) is to be paid on arrival at Airport.

For those who apply for visa directly, it is necessary to enclose letter from local sponsor (Company or individual).

For business visitors, Representative of Botswana Export, Development and Investment Authority (BEDIA) in India may be approached. The BEDIA Representative and his address is given below.

Indians who have no contact in Botswana may apply at British High Commission in New Delhi. They process application for visa to visit Botswana. However, applicants should submit their application at their Outsource Office (VFS) situated at B 2/3 Safdurjung Enclave, New Delhi.The processing time for Botswana application is around 5 to 8 weeks from date of application. The visa fee is Rs.1750/- and referral fee Rs. 850/-.

It is not possible to apply for Botswana visa online nor by e-mail or fax. Photocopy of visa application form are accepted. But it is essential to obtain visa in advance. You must have copy of authorisation for visa before you commence your travel. Otherwise, in the last port of exit before reaching Botswana, you may have difficulties unless you produce visa authorisation from Botswana Government.
